Courage is to some extent the foundation of all virtue for without it there Is no security for preserving any other virtue In dealing with the young courage Is particularly vital otherwise one goes down to meet the lowest common denominator instead of lifting It up to new ideals The fear of being unloved prevents them from urging others to seek a higher love As A Hutchinson makes one of his characters say in "If Winter "1 tell you Hapgood that plumb down in the crypt and abyss of every man's soul is a hunger a craving for other food than this earthly stuff And the churches know it and instead of reaching down to him what he wants Light Light instead of that they invite him to dancing and picture shows and 'you're a jolly fine fellow' and no spoil-sport He can get all of that outside the churches and get it better And there's no God there that a man can be lifted up to A man wouldn't care what he had to give up if he knew he was making for something inestimably Lt John Queener By Bishop FultooShrco For both the world and some Churches the only sins are social tins There are no personal sins Patients have taken the place of penitents Persons may be "sick" but they are never evil Evil exists only in political and economic order ltused to be that sins were classified according to the motivations and actions of persons then they were numbered as 6even: Pride greed lust anger envy gluttony and laziness No one ever hears of anyone today admitting that he is proud He is supposed to be as he egotizes: "I gotta be me I gotta be free" In place of these sins of the heart the only guilt admitted today is: ruining the environment organizing big monopolies and preparing for war Fingers are always pointed outward at someone thus immunizing the individual from any need of reprentance IT USED TO BE that Catholics were the only ones who believed in the Immaculate Conception or the sinlessness of the Mother of God Today everyone is immaculately conceived It is only society that has the stain of sin But this creates a bigger problem: if man is essentially good how can he produce corrupt political organizations and exploiting economic cartels and Water-gates If all the rivers and streams that run into the lake are pure why is the lake polluted? Young Generation Is Misunderstood Whatever the assignment the foreign mission field is as complex as the world Istelf An understanding of at least some of what is involved in evangelism as practiced abroad by American religious groups may be obtained with a glimpse at the activities of a single denomination the United Methodist Church WITH ABOUT 10 million members the nation's second largest Protestant organization it is outnumbered only by the Southern Baptists In its recently issued 1974 annual report the Methodist Board of World Ministries said it spend $132 million last year on work performed by 868 missionaries in 55 of the 73 countries with which Methodism is linked The mission fields ranged from overpopulated starving Bangladesh to sparsely settled Brazil from the regressive government of South Korea to the more open and hopeful political clim ate of Angola Some of the countries served need substantial assistance from American missionaries while others are sending out their own evangelical workers A few have declared moratoriums on admitting any more American church representatives TO ILLUSTRATE the com-plexity of the hodgepodge that constitutes the foreign field missionaries sent to Nepal are forbidden by the government to evangelize so they simply work as Christians through hospitals and schools Indonesia on the other hand has given complete freedom to evangelistic efforts which are conducted by Methodists principally in rural areas The Papanese Christian community is seeking help in a -national search for a set of values to go with the new national prosperity In South America where nearly every government is a military dictatorship religious organizations have asked for support in their operations as pressure groups A American church must thus be aware of a different set of rules and conditions in almost every country it includes in its mission ONE STRONG thread runs through missions nearly everywhere Hunger has become a common bond that has drawn people together in misery around the world The Board of Global Ministries declared that the "stark reality of world hunger" haunts the entire mission movement "Although Christians cannot cease responding to emergency situations it is essential that the root causes of poverty hunger and economic Inequities be determined and attacked" it said Calling for an end to what has come to be known as "Band-Aid evangelism" an airdrop of grain here a doctor with his stethoscope there the board emphasized that its primary concern has become a search for involvement in genuinely developmental projects BECAUSE funds and manpower are limited the board has decided that ways must be found to help the natives of foreign mission countries to develop and improve their own programs Of the Methodikt missionaries around the world last year many were engaged in teaching in medical work in rural development 'in literature and biblical interpretation and in special urban and industrial activities A large number were assigned to church-related evangelism mainly to train nationals to conduct their own outreach programs as "home mission" projects By CLAIRE COX Copley Newi Service NEW YORK -When the first missionaries set sail for Africa over 100 years ago they were prepared to preach and teach the Chf istian Gospel and little more Without any less evangelistic zeal today's missionaries still carry a Bible and a lot more Most foreign-service personnel of American religious bodies take with them everyday skills as well as biblical expertise and an interest in the whole person not just one's spiritual life ONE MISSIONARY may be assigned to teach multiplication tables to an Indian fourth-grade class Another may face the task of helping hospital personnel in a remote African town learn more efficient maintenance practices Others may be involved in road-building in South America well-drilling on a desert or simply helping local church bodies become better organized so they can fend for themselves Many go with bread Physical needs come before spiritual hunger in many parts of the world today it has been estimated that three-fourths of humanity live in misery sit around and let the world pass you by Most of my ser By JEAN HARDMAN Journal Staff Writer precious But he doesn know Light! Light! That's what he wants and the longer it is withheld the lower he will sink" SPIRITUAL COURAGE comes from goodness Supremacy in virtue strikes the wicked dumb That is why Christ could drive buyers and sellers out of the temple that is why Elijah could lay hold of the reins of the horses of the king's chariot and accuse him of destroying Israel It is interesting that the King Ahab taunted him: "Is it you you troubler of Israel?" Every great and courageous man who resists the current of evil is a disturber It is his business to disturb the comfortable and comfort and disturbed Alexander the Great was once asked how he conquered the world his answer was "By not wavering" As soon as a religious person ceases to think about the next Social Church Issues Face Christian Church 's Conference mons are about this This is the main object of the Salvation Army" Lt Queener himself became interested in the Salvation Army as a teen-ager in Mobile Ala His older brother was active in the SA church but young John didn't want any part of any church "My brother talked me into going to one of the Salvation Army's meetings I didn't want to but I went When I got there I was greeted by at least 15 people I saw concern 'for people I was looking for something and I found it at that meeting: Friendship and true love" SINCE THEN the rest of the Queener family has joined the Salvation Army either as soldiers or as members of the church In their new role as assistants John and Linda Queener hope to organize open-air meetings street-corner evangelizing "We won't be teaching Salvation Army or trying to get members' Rather we want to get people to accept Christ" says Lt Queener Plans aiso include children's open-air meetings where there is a need Locations would include housing projects and parks if permission were granted THIS AGGRESSIVE evangelism is what William Booth had in mind when he founded the Salvation Army in England in the 1860's The Methodist minister saw a need for more overt ministry and realized no organized churches including the Methodist Church were doing enough of it "We need to reach out to the people" says Lt Queener "We need to reach the lost that's our major Lt John Queener new assistant at the local Salvation Army center disagrees with talk about today's "lost generation" of youth "The young generation is not lost" says the 27-year-old lieutenant "Maybe they're not understood Maybe they don't understand adults But we must take each other's hands and pull together instead of pulling apart" YOUNG PEOPLE are one of Lt Queener's prime interests They also are a prime responsibility in his new position He and his wife Linda married couples assume dual roles in the Salvation Army are in charge of the local SA church and youth program The two recently graduated from the Salvation Army's two-year training school in Atlanta Ga and are both now ordained ministers of the church Their assistantship in the local SA center Is their first assignment How do you reach out to those youth who seem so far beyond reach? "If you show a person you really care you will be accepted If they're in need of God that's what I'm here for" says the soft-speaking young minister "If you can show them God everything else will fall into place" ON THE SUBJECT of responsibility seemingly alien to an alarming number of youth today Lt Queener is firm "My wife and I show them the need for responsibility Too often adults tell young people 'you must do this or that' but not telling them why "The Bible teaches that you must be a worker You can't Tex Disciples' general minister and president Dr Kenneth Teegarden of Indianapolis Ind and Dr Woolfolk Also scheduled during the assembly are a mariachi mass two days of interest groups numerous meal events with guest speakers Bible lectures and worship Special guests at the assembly will include representatives of church bodies in Argentina Cuba India Jamaica Japan Mexico Paraguay the Philippines Puerto Rico South Africa Thailand Venezuela and Zaire Ohio minister second vice president who heads the business committee Speakers on sub-themes of the overall theme "We Celebrate with will include Georgia Congressman Andrew Young All-Africa Conference of Churches executive Canon Burgess Carr from Kenya and National Council of Churches faith and order executive Dr Jorge Lara-Braud OTHERS ARE NCC third vice president Mrs Eunice Santana de Velez of Lares Puerto Rico former Disciples assembly president Dr Granville Walker of Fort Worth A SMATTERING of other issues among the 78 business items that will be before the church body: capital punishment civil rights in the Philippines pornography gambling world hunger evangelism and funding theological education Presiding during the assembly will be Dr Jean Woolfolk Little Rock Ark attorney and insurance company executive who is moderator of the church She will share the platform with Judge James A Noe Mercer Island Wash first vice president who heads the program committee and Dr John Compton Cincinnati Some pulpits today never speak of a judgment on evil but rather moralize about city blight and be-mugged streets As Muggeridge wrote: "A but-cher who advocates vegetarianism would be a rarity but clergymen with strong atheistic proclivities are as common as black horses Salesmen who do not believe in their products but sell only sociology produce a world full of revolutionary men who want to change the world but are unwilling to change themselves Thus too many churches in their exclusive concern with the social to the neglect of personal holiness have only the perfume of an empty bottle In their fever to "be with it" they have lost the meaning of their own vocation to "be with Christ" As Ruskin warned: "When it dares not decide practically between good and evil and can neither honor the one or smite the other but sneers at the good as if it were a hidden evil and consoles the evil with pious sympathy the end is come" HOW MEET THIS challenge of a mood which makes society evil and the person guiltless? The answer must be: the courage of the few "If the trumpets give an uncertain sound who will prepare for world he becomes ineffective in this It is only when we aim at heaven that this world is thrown in Those who live by this principle are the courageous With John Donne they say: "I need Thy thunder 0 God Thy songs no longer suffice us" Korean Paper Wins Award NEW YORK (UPI) The Reporters' Struggle Committee for Freedom of the Press of the South Korean newspaper Dong-A Ilbe has been awarded the 1975 AD Freedom of the Press award for resisting government pressure to slant news coverage according to AD magazine a joint publication of the United Church of Christ and the United Presbyterian Church in the USA SAN ANTONIO Texas -Abortion diplomatic recognition of Vietnam support of farm workers and other potentially explosive issues will confront a cross-section of some 9000 North American church people here in the August Texas heat The people will be coming from some 2000 cngregations from Honolulu to Miami three-fourths lay people and just about evenly divided between male anf female THEY'LL BE coming Aug 15 to the every-other-year General Assembly of the 13 million-member Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) a body active in interdenominational efforts and generally considered a part of the Protestant ainstream But it's an unusual grassroots assembly: all of those coming will have the right to speak on issues over half of them the right to vote They'll be facing two abortion resolutions neither favors abortion outright but one recommended by the church's General Board takes a liberal stance IT OPPOSES legislation that would force a particular religious belief about abortion on everybody and it urges the church to minister to persons facing unwanted pregnancy Religion News Hargett to Be Speaker For City Hall Chapel goal" Shreveport Steamer quarterback Edd Hargett will be the speaker for the Aug 6 Contemporary Movies Add to Difficult Problem Indications for Consideration in Theraputic Abortion" Sunday at the Unitarian -Universalist Church Dr Juberg is the director of the Birth Defects Center at LSU Medical School in Shreveport Waynesboro Miss He attended Bob Jones University and entered the ministry in 1949 He has also served as president of Southern Methodist College and as vice president of the South Carolina Conference of the Southern Methodist Church Rev Terry is married to the former Apphia Adele Guillermin and the couple has seven children ranging in age from 13 to 25 become increasingly difficult in today's complex society And the moviemakers in Hollywood are contributing greatly to their already tough problems IN RECENT weeks I have gone to several movies all carrying the PG (parental guidance) rating and have been surprised to see how low the average person's morals have sunk and how vulgar THE OLD TESTAMENT instruction in Proverbs says "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old he will not depart from it" Paul in his letter to the church at Ephesus said "Bring them (children) up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord" These are verses to which most parents try to adhere however their jobs have By ED PETTIS Hollywood is making it more and more difficult for parents to fulfill their Biblical instructions regarding proper child rearing Most parents whether they profess to be believers in God or not strive to bring up their children in a wholesome atmosphere pretty much in keeping with such verses as Proverbs 22:6 and Ephesians 6:4 chapel service at Shreveport City Hall Other speakers for this month include Rev James Lewis of Sanderville Ga Aug 13 Rev Mike Alexander Woodlawn Baptist Church Aug 20 and Rev Faler Waller Baptist Church Aug 27 Homecoming Mt Zion Baptist Church located east of Clay off Highway 148 will hold homecoming Sunday and then begin a week-long revival meeting on Monday Jerry Norton on Bastrop will be the speaker for the homecoming service at 10 am Sunday and Rev James Ganey of the Melody Acres Ranch at Chatham will be the evangelist for the revival Services will be at 7:30 pm each day Camp Meeting Dave Roeuer an ex-member of a Vietnam demolition squad will speak at the annual Northwest Louisiana Assembly of God Camp meeting Monday through Thursday at 7:30 pm and 10 am Tuesday through Thursday at the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church 2710 Virginia Ave Roeuer who narrowly escaped death when a bomb exploded several inches from his face while he was on an ttnderwater mission will tell of his war-time experiences Dedication The Plain Dealing Assembly of God will dedicate its 'new church building Sunday at 2 pm with Rev Wakton of Alexandria district superintendent as the featured speaker Enjoyment of Giving In Harms Child A call for diplomatic recognition of both Vietnams and Cambodia is only a part of an appeal for reconciliation of the people of the United States and Indochina after a painful war The farm worker resolution would continue boycotts against non-United Farm Worker wines lettuce and grapes until secret ballot elections determine which union the workers want A more internal issue could generate considerable heat at the six-day gathering as well That is an item expressing intention to work toward removing any stumbling blocks to receiving of mem-bers from other denominations THE ACTION would affirm the Consultation on Church Union's steps toward "mutual recognition of members" and commit the assembly to continue seeking a united church Other OCU churches will be watching this one closely in that the church long has been at the forefront of the ecumenical movement but its New Pastor their everyday language has become In the movie rating system PG generally is regarded by the public to be mild fare suitable for the entire family although parents are recommended to use discretion in letting their youngsters attend Based on what I have seen recently it is unfortunate that Hollywood sees fit to turn out very few G-rated films recommended for small children Even the PG movies contain some nudity at times and language that would make even the proverbial foul-mouthed sailor blush I haven't been to the recent and X-rated films and I can only imagine how much lower the movie industry has gone PROBABLY the thing that upsets me most about the current movie content is the fact that most of the nudity and vulgarity are unnecessary Most of the bare flesh appears to me to be solely for the sake of sensationalism and most of the four-letter words could be replaced just as effectively by less-offensive language Unfortunately their presence in the movies of today are symbolic of the low spiritual plain upon which the nation appears to have settled And this plain will not be raised until the movie-goers make their complaints known to the motion picture industry and demand a return to the days when going to the movies could be a family affair father of the man and in his growing up needs the firm loving guidance of his parents INDIAN CAST PROVO Utah (UPI)' -Brigham Young University's Department of Motion Picture Productions is completing what it believes to be the first film ever produced with an all-Indian cast The film entitled "A 'Dif-ferent Drum" will be released this fall Rev Wallace Terry has assumed the pastorate of First Southern Methodist Church in Shreveport He has been pastor of the Southern Methodist Church in punishment Children want to know how far they can go and they desperately need the counsel which comes to them from parents who take the time to raise their youngsters with love and with strength and with intelligence The home is the basic source of human character IT IS UP to the parents in the home to see to it that they do their job well that the children who grow up under their control are children who have learned that there are many things which they must do that they don't like to do Anniversary Ingleside Baptist Church will honor its pastor Rev Jack Merritt Sunday for his 15 years as church pastor A native of Mississippi Rev Merritt was graduated from Mississippi College and Southwestern Theological seminary Prior to coming to Shreveport he served in pastorates in Texas and Fund Festival Ends Sunday By Dr Hyman Schachtel The quickest way to ruin a child's character is to give in to all of his demands To produce a juvenile delinquent we have only to spare him any kind of discipline and always say "yes" to his whims and fancies A child who is raised without obligations and responsibilities in the home a child who can get away with anything that he pleases a child who is indulged constantly is going to be twisted into a type of personality which is maladjusted When will parents ever learn that you do not build fine people out of children who have everything their own1 way? When will we ever understand that the child is who by word and deed show the child the way he should go if he is to be a good person in this world? OF COURSE it is much easier to give in to the child to be afraid of him and to try to avoid his tantrums It is much easier to say "yes" than to say "no" because it gets the immediate emergency off your hands and you don't have to worry about dealing with a disappointed child Nevertheless if we who are parents are to be worthy of the privilege of parenthood we must create in our homes an atmosphere of law and order of discipline and of reasonable practice of baptism is immersion and many congregations still do not accept unimmersed transfers The General Assembly cannot force any congregation to alter its practices The document under which the church operates expressly reserves membership determination to congregations All activities are open to the public A framed Louisiana scene valued at over $500 painted and donated by well-known artist Louis Sicard of Shreveport will be the focal point of an auction at 2 pm A kiddie auction will be held simulatneously A full range of family activities Sunday will climax the sixth annual building fund festival at Christ the King Church in Bossier City The doors open at 10 am at 1063 Barksdale Blvd with a fried chicken dinner all-day flea market and games cake walks and booths for all ages I and that there are many unpleasant responsibilities in this world which must be met by decent and loyal people Life is more than fun Life is a dedication Speaker Dr Richard Juberg will speak on "Fetal and Maternal i.
