WtltlKLY JOURNAL A PRETTY WEDDING PLEASANTS all the claimants for party honors on the opposition ticket say as much for their candidacy Is not party fealty at least more than even so far as Levy and Phillips are concerned Hardware Co Dealers In Hardware Machinery Supplies Agricultural Implements other hand admitting the ability of Messrs Wise and Alexander as lawyers it is a well known fact that they are paid and retained by railway corporations as attorneys therefore it is fair to assume that they will always and everywhere protect the interests of their clients as able and honest lawyers will do therefore the best interests of the people demand that representatives of corporations should be elected to stay away from the constitutional convention Messrs Levy and Phillips are the logical candidates of the people They' ould go to the convention as the representatives of the people and would not have corporation influences hanging over them to possibly influence their actions All things being equai it does seem that the people' of Caddo parish can best further their own interests by- voting for Levy Jr and Phillips as delegates to the constitutional Agents for Houston Stanwood Gamble Engines and Builera Smith Cotton Gin and Press Walter A Mowers and Rakes and a complete line of Fishing Tackle Corn Mills Chattanooga Cane Mills Hardwood Split Pulleys Have always in stock Washburn Waukegan Wire Atkins Saws Saws Saws Fairbanks Scales Victor Victoria Seales Boston and Niagara Rubber Belts Chicao-n Leather Belts Corn Mills and Brimlv Plow To Retail You will find it to 30111 advantage to obtain prices from ANDREW QUERBES Before Going Elsewhere AT Wholesale Dealer in Fruits and Produce Vehicles Dealers! The Independent Wholesale Grocer I WADIKY AXAOKK 8I1REVEP0RT LA NOV 25 football Gov Jones of Arkansas comes out strongly condemnation of the game of football In a letter to President Buchanan of the State University at Fayetteville Gov Jones says'! think the game of football as now played is brutal sport fraught with much danger to those playing and altogether out of harmony with a proper educational system In fact it has been so notoriously so that bills have been introduced in the legislatures of several states and passed by at least one of them to make it unlawful my opinion the higher civilization which we profess is entirely inconsistent with the toleration of such a game and there fore it being inexiiedient to call a meeting of the board of trustees I deem it my duty to call your attention to this matter and respectfully suggest that you put a stop altogether to the playing of the game by the students of the university' The best interests of this university I think clearly demand this and I hope you will take the matter at once into serious The governor is ex-ofiieio president of the State University board of trustees therefore it is safe to predict that henceforth there will be no more football games on the campus of the Arkansas State University Til ICI It PLANS What are some of Mr sturdy commoners going to think of the attempt of some of the gilt-edge Simon-pure factors of the faction trying to knife him in the interest of a ticket headed and The seif-elected delegation was too weak to ignore the etition' ol the boo who made the call on Wise and Alexander Times The purpose of the above paragraph evidently is to create the impression that Air Phillips is to bo by the Democrats who selected him as one ol their candidates If so it will fail to accomplish its intended purpose There will be no swapping votes by the Caddo Parish Democracy but they will vote the ticket st raight an the primaries And that is not all every son of them will get out and work for the success of his ticket hen the polls close on the evening of December 2 they7 wili have made the opposition aware of th5 fact that they' were rot weak to ignore the petition of If a ticket headed and makes its appearance on election day we feel warranted in saying now that it may be Lace able to the opposition to Levy and Phillip- and a scheme of their own to save one of their crew' from a sinking craft by tacking on to the tow-line of Levy and Phillips The organ of the opposition has simply unwittingly let the cat out of the bag by giving away one -of their smooth tricks to win half a victory if possible over odds We are therefore obliged for the WHU Alt: THIS LOGICAL CAN 1 It is not the purpose or intention I of The Journal to cast any' unjust reflections on the candidates who oppose Messrs Levy and Phillips in this contest before the primaries We wish to deal fairly with them and it is our purpose to eschew personalities and harsh criticism believe Messrs Wise and Alexander personally to be good citizens dignified gentlemen and able lawyers But it is a mistake to assume that only' lawyers are competent to serve as members of the constitutional convention If elected Messrs Levy and Phillips will ably represent Caddo parish the constitutional convention and the people's interests would be in safe hands and no doubt of it On iUih Florence looke and Mr IKobert Emmet Coiuegy From the Daily of November IS The First Presbyterian church was the scene of a brilliant wedding last night the occasion being the marriage of Miss Florence Cooke to Mr Robert Emmett Comegys well and favorably known roung people of this community Long before the appointed hour 7 o'clock seyeral hundred friends of the high contracting parties crowded the stately edifice and the church was a blae of light the altar being most beautifully banked and decorated with fragrant flowers the incense of which most pleasantly permeated the atmosphere Promptly at 7 o'clock the bridal party arrived Their entrance was heralded by a flow of melody from the organ a wedding march ringing out in throbbing tones under the deft touch of the organist Miss Clara Prescott The ushers in full dress Messrs Foster Jr Will Young A McCutohen and Henj Gray in couples preceded the bridal party to the altar rail where the pastor Rev VanLear performed the solemn rites in his impressive manner during which a marriage benediction was softly sounded from the organ The bride a petite blonde looked charming in a mode-t street gown of dove-colored cloth with hat and gloves of co -responding tones The groom wore the eonvehticn il They made a handsome looking couple atd their appearance elicited a murmur ot admiration through the audience To the strains of Mendelssohn's the bridal party left the church and entered waiting carriages when they were driven to the residence of the groom's brother where an elaborate wedding supper was served to the invited guests and a most delightful reception held The groom is the efficient bookkeeper for the 'W II Ogilvie wholesale grocery house and is a young gentleman of more than ordinary qualifications The bride is one of Shreveport's sweetest and fairest flowers and has a large circle of friends She has been organist at the church in which she was married for a number of years and is deservedly popular with that large congregation The large number of costly and useful presents received attest the general popularity of the young couple who start in life together under such favorable and auspicious circumstances That the roses of hope and happiness may ever blossom anil blow along their pathway is the wish of their host of admiring frieods and well-wishers A COMING EVENT- In tbe Texas Flower and Vegetable Show The Joints was complimented this morning with a call from Messrslt Yoakum general freight and passenger agent and Wm Doherty traveling freight and passenger agent of the Houston East and West Texas railroad They informed us that great preparations are being made for the Texas Fruit Flower and Vegetable show which is to be held at Houston on December Cth to Hth inclusive This will be quite an attractive and interesting exposition which will no doubt draw a large attendance from this section General Passenger Agent Yoakum intorms us that the H'E railroad will give the usual reduced rates on this occasion which will be an inducement to Shreveport people to attend the great Fruit Flower and Vegetable show Perfetlly Harmonious We see from The Shkevei-okt that Mr Wm Edenborn and Mr Geo Fouke have had a conference with the Cotton lelt officials in that city and that the meeting was sats-factory to both parties and great good lor both parties and great good for Shreveport is to come -out of it Tcx-arkanian Just bo The conference w-as harmonious Everything is lovely and the goose hangs out of sight The Social Whirl The danee given by the Commercial Club last night was an elegant and enjoyable affair in every way and happy indeed were those whose good fortune it was to attend The clnh has the reputation of giving the most delightful divertisements in the social realm and the reception and ball last night was no exception to the rule Educate Tone Bowels With Ciucarets SaAhrJlci Mur? forever 100 85c If ail druggists refund money The supporters of Messrs Wise and Alexander realize that they have worthy of their in this contest In other words they' have come to realize the fact that Levy and Phillips have a few in their fol lowing The lance and quiver are in good shape The arrows from its quiver go straight to the mark while its lance strikes a vital spot at every charge It is tearless of an adversary and enters any- aul all conflicts with dash and courage Let the Democratic primaries be conducted fairly No unfair methods should be employed by' either faction but let the will of 7 the majority be honestly registered and then let us all abide by' the result and support the nominees The campaign before the primaries is a contest between Democrats The primary' election should lie fairly conducted and none but Democrats and qualified electors should be allowed to participate the primary election Tw farmers fought a duel with stones at Gadsden Ala the other day with the result that one of them will die The French style would have been less serious and at the same time given them much more notoriety udge Jackson of WestVirginia has supplemented his civil service decision by' ordering that the deposed deputy United States marshals be paid their salaries Judge Jackson is something of a himself The more the people think of it the more thoroughly' they' become convinced that Capt Simon Levy' aiulL Phillips are the best men to represent them in the constitutional convention Congressman Benton McMtllin boldly asserts that he and a few others will block the game of the Republicans in the next congress It is to be hoped he is not talking through liis hat The Commercial Appeal thinks it may turn out that Mark Hanna has a receipt for his legislature If so it would be well for him to keep an eye on Foraker or he may' get Yellow fever has about run its course in Aew Orleans and the gates of commerce are again thrown open We may now hope for a rapid revival of business Messrs Levy and Phillips do not appear quite so now to the opposition In fact they' are growing stronger with the jieople day by day There is no room in Shreveport for Let the police see to it that such gentry are made to when they land this city Grover Cleveland has again demonstrated his bull-headedness by naming that kid in opposition to the wishes of the Princeton crew Shreveport has donned her business suit and is now ready to compete for commercial supremacy' Messrs Ievy and Phillips have a strong following and the number is increasing daily' Texarkana i9 having a fair but the Texarkana papers are not at all mum on the subject people For this reason the citv of Shreveport has a reputation that is co-ex tensive with the union and she is fast rivalling New' Orleans as a commercial center Nor di I she acquire this pleasing position by' luck or by chance With natural resources far inferior to those which abound here she has made the most rapid strides in this busy' world and today is secure that position to which the thrift and fur-sigh ten-ness of her people have raised her Natchitoches Enterprise We fully appreciate the compliment dear Enterprise but we object to your estimate of our natural resources No city in the South is blessed with better natural advantages than Shreveport It is an ideal spot for a great city- and with its splendid geographical location and the magnificent agricultural country surrounding it and the superior railway' and navigation facilities with which it is blessed Shreveport is now a formidable rival of New Orleans as a commercial center Shreveport is bouud tu be a great city: no doubt of it The opposition to Messrs Simon Levy' Jr and Phillips are doing some very lively practice on the political gridiron They realize that the nboe named gentlemen are strong candidates and to defeat them they must exert their utmost strength and influence and turn loose the campaign fund But our judgment they are sweetness on the desert for Levy and Phillips are with the people and the people are with them hence they are sure winners Biblically speaking it is harder for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heavenjhan for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle It be said with equal correctness that it is more difficult for a professional politician to be honest than for an elephant to go through the eye of a Hot Springs Sentinel The political editor of the Times fell down
