reporter in New Orleans the other day anent railroad matters and it would appear from what he says that the Gee road will for some time to come at least make New Orleans its objective point on the gulf The Times-Demo-crat says In a conversation with Mr Sargent relative to the route that gentleman remarked that he was in the city for busine-s The road is now-running regular trains direct from Kansas City to Lake Charles and this city and as the greater amount of the road's business wilL lx handled into this city via the Southern Pacific Company from Lake Charles the interesting point the fact that no impediment now bars the way to business by the new route is of considerable importance generally Mr Sargent said yesterday that the cutire business of lii line will be done into New Orleans While work is progressing into Port Arthur it will be a long time before anything definite is done at that location and in the meantime this city will get the benefit of the new traffic brought about by the "Fee-Gee" He saut also that the new crop of Texas and Kansas was beginning tiynuve gulfward Already 50 000 bushels have been loaded at various poiuts along the line and the grain will be at this end of line in a few days It will be handled at the Chalmette elevator as will probably all of the grain that comes to this city by the "The indications are" remarked Mr Sargent "that our line will liaudie at least a third of the Western export grain and products other than gram to the Gulf The Miossouri Kansqs and Texas the Illinois Central the Missouri Paeifie and the Texas and Pacific and our line will handle practically all of the export material The crops of corn wheat and oats in the West are magnificent and the quality of the grain is very tine There is no reason why the farmers should not do an excellent business this season and the roads will naturally come in fora big share of the general prosperity which is bound to The Kansas City Pittsburg and Gulf lias perfected its traffic arrangements with the Southern Pacific people and while some of the freight will be given the Texas and Pacific at Shreveport the Southern Pacific will by force of circumstances secure the bulk There is little prospect of Galveston getting much of the G's business unless the material is routed to that p'-'int by the shippers The interests of the line seem to centre in this also of the Democratic advisory or steering committee lie had long been awarded by common consent the front place on both sides of the chamber in parliamentary questions and in recent years he has been more frequently heard in expounding these questions than in the elucidation of other subjects He was possessed of a very nositive manner and never failed to throw into his statements concerning parliamentary practice the fullestforce of which he was capable His language on these and other occasions was generally so uncompromising that he was regarded by those who him as a man of little -feeling This was not true and that the contrary was not true are none so willing to testify as his opponents in the Senate who unite in attributing to him a warm heart as well as a just spirit and a brilliant mind Senator Harris had not been especially active in the Senate since the passage of the Wilson-Gormon tariff He was one of the three Democratic Senators intrusted with the arduous duty putting the bill in shape in committee and to him was delegated the control of the parliamentary work of getting the bill through the Senate Although then a man of advanced years his energies never seemed to lag He was at his post of dutv day and night and no man in the oDpos tion who sought in turn a legislative bill ever caught liiui napping but once They adjourned one day earlier than he intended when he was temporarily absent but he made the incident so disagreeable to friend and foe that the experiment was not repeated He was a tireless worker and made it a point to be prompt in his
