at the Heavenly Gates Funeral Home and the body will lie in state on Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. at the Mt. Canaan Baptist Church. Sis.

Smith was born to the late Archie Ellis and Florence Lee Ellis in Sicily Island, Louisiana. She graduated from Franklin Parish Training School, Winnsboro, Louisiana, with a second grade teacher's certificate. She further matriculated at Southern University and Grambling College, receiving her Bachelor of Arts Degree. Further study was done at Louisiana State University and the Technical Institute in Monterey, Mexico. She received her Masters Degree from Prairie View College.

Her Practical Nursing Training was earned from the Grady Nursing School in Atlanta, Georgia. Sister Smith was the first African American from her hometown of Sicily Island, Louisiana to become an educator. She was a public school teacher in the Caddo Parish System for 26 years. She helped to open up the Physicians and Surgeons Hospital to African Americans in Shreveport assisting doctors such as Dr. N.L.

Lacy, Dr. Samples, Dr. Wallace Brown, Dr. John Cobbs, Dr. J.C.

Brierre, Dr. Mel-vin Jarrett, and many others. She assisted in the delivery of the first African American born in the Physicians and Surgeons Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was also the Area Manager for Field Enterprise Education (World Book) and assisted in placing these encyclopedias in the homes of many under privilege children, especially in the Cooper Road neighborhood by paying the first payment. Sister Smith has been a member of the Mt.

Canaan Baptist Church family since April 1949 where she faithfully served in the senior choir member, deaconess board, pastor's aid president, building committee member for the Family Life Center, children's ministry, Church Historian, and Mt. Canaan's first Christian Education Director. She was a major donor in 1980 for the present worship facility. Although these are only a fraction of her contributions to the Mt. Canaan Family, her most cherished memory was being chairman of the pulpit committee 40 years ago, to elect present pastor, Harry Blake.

Sister Smith was a life member of Sigma Gamma Rho, Inc. Sorority where she served faithfully in many leading positions nationally, regionally, and locally for over 45 years. Other affiliations are: National Council of Negro Women, United College Fund, National Advancement of Colored People, YWCA, Cancer Society, Red River Revel volunteer, Sickle Cell Organization, Security National Bank Board of Directors. She is predeceased by her parents and one step son Eddie Lee Smith. Cherishing her memory: loving husband of 63 years Deacon Edinburg Smith; two children Jacqueline Anna Smith Bradley of St.

Louis, Missouri and William Edinburg Smith of Shreveport; one brother Deacon Joel Ellis of Shreveport; one sister Margaret Crowley of St. Louis, Missouri; and a host of other relatives and friends. Family hour will be Friday, April 14th from p.m. at Greater Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 1500 Gngsby Street. Deacon Evans was a member of the 1957 class of Booker T. Washington High School. He retired from Pennzoil Refinery Company.

His wife, Milewease S. Evans, survives him along with daughter, Jennifer and sons, Kenneth (Kim) and Curtis. His grandchildren include: Keiau-na, Kalvin, KaVonte' and Chelsey, all of Shreveport. She was born on July 19, 1929, in Alto, LA. Mrs. Evanoff was a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church in Bossier City. Her hobbies were gardening and photography.

She was a gifted stenographer and medical transcriptionist. Her parents and ten siblings preceded her in death. Surviving her is her loving husband of 55 years George Evanoff; daughters and sons-in-law: Debbie Evanoff Abrahm and Billy of Ruston, Diane Evanoff Germain and John of Seattle, WA; son George Evanoff, Jr. of Seattle, WA; sisters: Verniece Horton of West Monroe, Mackie Fitch of Monroe, Betty Thompson of Chattanooga, TN; grandchildren: Shelley Abrahm Cooper, Lind-sey Abrahm Clark, Erin Evanoff, Kris-ten Germain, Ryan Evanoff, Matt Abrahm, Jill Germain; sisters-in-law: Hazel Dean Duchesne of West Monroe, Eloise Duchesne of Bossier City, and many friends. W. Stewart Rhea) SHREVEPORT, LA Ella Mae Colmer Rhea died on Thursday, April 13, 2006. She was born in Hatties-burg, Mississippi, and celebrated her 100th birthday on April 27, 2005. She married W. Stewart Rhea in 1927.

Mr. Rhea died in 1974. The Rheas never had any children, but were treated by their numerous nieces and nephews as loving parents. Mrs. Rhea was a longtime active member of First United Methodist Church.

She had lived at The Glen for many happy years. Mrs. Rhea had been a member of several organizations, including sewing clubs and book clubs. She loved the attention she got from her "family" at The Glen and The Gleaners at her church. Mrs.

Rhea is survived by a special sister-in-law, Pauline K. Colmer, and many nieces and nephews, including, Mary Elizabeth and Hubert Owen, Andrea and Jim Boyles, Marvin "Buddy" and Pat Colmer, Eloise and Willie Lout, Charles and Dorothy Rhea, Jeannette Cole Mater, Stewart Gilbert, Nan Gilbert, Stewart Grant and Jenni Williams, Robert Barrett and Debbie Williams, Priscilla Dansby and Michael Schneider, Andrew and Pearl Cole, Andrew William and Patty Cole, Marshall and Eddie Cole, and James Joseph and Lavonne Cole.
