chess champion, failed to show up for the 12th game in his match with challenger Samuel Keshevsky today, The referee called it a forfeit victory for Reshevsky and set off a storm that could rock chess circles for weeks, Referee Irving Rivise gave this account: A wwk ago the game was rescheduled from Saturday evening to 11 a. m. today. Fischer protested. Officials warned him to appear or lose.

When Fischer didn't show up today, 'Rivise declared the forfeit. "I never expected this." said Reshevsky. And he left. Fischer was not available for comment. Rivise said the change was ordered because Reschevsky would not play on Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath.

The referee added: "I think Fischer felt this was done to accommodate Reshevsky and wouldn't have anything to do with it. We haven't been unreasonable he has." Another official said, "He's a late riser he doesn't like to play early." Stewart made one of the most difficult decisions of his professional life as a public school teacher. He turned down a transfer. He decided to remain as principal of McDonogh No. 19 elementary school in New Orleans, the big downtown school where all the white students walked out when three first-grade Negro girls came to school by federal court order. "We have our professional pride," the youngest principal in the school system later told the Associated Press in an exculsive interview.

"And, it's a joy to work at this school." Trouble was a constant companion at McDonogh No. 19 last year. Will it be during the school term which opens in a few weeks? "As it stands now," said Stewart, "we'll open the doors and see what happens. There have been no contacts made with parents about returning to school no survey has been made." Principal Stewart will not be the only one of the forgotten people to return to teaching at McDonogh and at William Frantz, the other public school desegregated last fall. Twelve of 15 teachers will be back at McDonogh, 17 of 18 will be back at William Frantz.

"During the days when the pub-lie thought we may not have been doing anything," said Stewart, "we were preparing a language arts program for grades one through six. It takes a look at what might be taught in readipg, writing, listening and speaking." One teacher, who with the others preferred to remain anonymous, said: "There was a feeling of respect and closeness among the 1647 KINGS HIGHWAY OLD GRAND-DAD, OLD TAYLOR JOHN A.
