That funny comedy, "Dr. Bill," which had such a iong and successfel run at the New Garden theatre, New York City, will be presented here for the first time at the opera-house Friday and Saturday and Saturday matinee, March 24 and 25. The Houston Lost of March 7 speaks of the performance as follows: This afternoon at Sweeney Coombs' opera-house a good-sized audience gathered at the matinee to greet the very laughable comedy, uniquely denominated "Dr. Bill." Judging from the very frequent and spirited applause the audience, though composed almost entirely of ladies, was greatly pleased. "Dr.

Bill" is new to this city, and contrary to the general run of London and New York successes when presented away from the metropolis, it has the advantage of a competent company of comedians. Besides, it is put upon the stage in an exceptionally excellent manner, with careful attention to stage getting and embellishment. Altogether the play and the players were among the most satisfactory seen for a long time. The particularly pleasing feature of "Dr. Bill" lies largely in the fact that every character is a comedy one there is nothing truly serious about it.

That which in the action of the comedy might be grave, owing to the danger involved by mistaken identity, is really the consistently humorous part of it. Thoughtless husbands and wives, an ambitious father-in-law, a flat-headed dude, a frolicsome variety actress and a jealous superintendent of police seem to get hopelessly mixed in flirtation and counter flirtations, but as all concerned finally get to behave like rational beings, the harm-lessness of the supposed wrong-doers becomes apparent, and reconciliation becomes the business of the whole company. There is an entire absence Of any suggestion of coarseness in the whole comedy, and its fun is Pearl Saloon anil Restaurant 722 MARKET STUEET. In this connection I announce that my bar is supplied with the best Wines, Liquors and Cigars. I have also opened at 720 Market street, a complete stock of FAMILY GROCERIES which I offer to the trade at the lowest prices.

They are neither expensive to build nor to operate. They are, I think, excellent boats for this part of the country." "Do you think that there is any possibility of a whalebaek shipbuilding yard being established here?" "It is rather premature to say anything about the establishment, of a whalebaek plant here just yet. Still, some such a thing as the estab-lishmet of a plant on the gulf has been talked over. Captain McDoucal is looking the lay of the land over, and he will see pretty much all that is of interest." "Have you been down to the jetty this trip?" "No. Captain McDougal will go there, and he will see the harbor thoroughly.

That is what he is here for, at our request. When I found1 that he could come, I brought him. As I said before, he is helping us to find a suitable place to reach tidewater." "What is being done at Velasco?" "I didn't notice much of any work being done on the jetties. It struek me that a few new buildings had been erected. I didn't notice how many of them were occupied, nor the business beine done." When Captain McDougal goes out on the jetty and sees the sweep and force of the currents he will no doubt readily see that, after the north jetty has been completed, the scour of the outgoing volume of accumulated water will relieve Galveston from being considered a shallow water port.

And when he reads this morning's News and sees the business done here the past year, be will lind some facts and figures which are of much interest. Overdrafts, secured and unse cured 226,376 67 IT. The Sunday law is being rigidly enforced in Assumption, Ascension and St. James parishes, comprising the Twelfth Judicial District, much to the displeasure of storekeepers.

Merchants attempted to hold an indignation meeting in St. James, but the effort was a failure. One proprietor defied the law and was arrested and placed under bond to answer. The law is very generally observed. A rice milling company is one of the latest enterprises of Crowley.

T. Beauregard to the city of Charleston. The committee appointeu to receive the sword were. Wm. A.

Courtney, ex-mayor of Charleston C. S. Gadson, member of the city council Ilev. John Johnston and General T. A.

Hugue-non. They were appropriately received by a delegation of Confederate Veterans, headed by General John Glynn, Jr. The presentation took plaee at the residence in the presence of the members of the family and a few distinguished guests. The grandson of the General, G. T.

Beauregard, a handsome boy of 1-' years, nude the presentation, in the following words: "Gentleman Bearing my grandfather's name, the family has conferred upon me the honor of presenting to you, welcome representatives of a chivalrous race, the sword bequeathed to the city of Charleston. This sword is yours. Keep it as a holy thing as a memento of my grandfather's admiration and love for the heroic city of a heri.ie people." This was appropriately replied to by the committee and this behest of the dead Southern chieftain was complied with. Among the much needed and attractive improvements of Natchitoches is the project to build an opera-house. It is to be built by the oil company of that city, which insures its success.

The Knights of Pythias of Natchitoches will soon have in course of construction a lodge-room. That order in "Ye Ancient City" is both flourishing and progressive. In speaking of the recent interview between Mr. Hugh Watson and Gov. Foster, which has led the governor to send a special agent to Catahoula, to investigate the condition of the people the States says "We think in this the governor is acting wisely.

But the representative he sends should be cautioned against accepting the denials of parties not residents of the devastated districts, but to proceed directly into the neighborhoods along Little Black river and French Fork. There, unless the situation has been miraeu-lously changed within the last four weeks, the representatives of the governor will find between four and ne hundred people, men, women and children, with a few exceptions perhaps, all whites, in a state of absolute destitution, suffering, not only for the decencies, but for the actual necessaries to keep soul and body together," CITY HOTEL, FIRST CLASS THROUGHOUT, SHREVEPORT, LA- A.
